The Lego RCX unit is great in the sense: it's cheap, it's stable and it has enough in/outputs for automating.
Below are notes on how to work with the RCX in 2013. The unit is from 1998, so getting it running on todays software can be a challenge. I have copied and pasted the information from the links into this page.
The RCX is a great place to get into robotics cheap and the basic components are still the same (motors, sensors).

Getting RCX to work on Windows 7
From: lego-robotics forum
I had two laptops giving me that same error: "A critical error has occurred. You may be running out of memory, or you may need to reinstall Robotics Invention System 2.0." It must have been a recent Windows update that messed them up, as these computers worked just a few weeks ago.
Here's what I did to get them working again:
1. Log onto your computer as Administrator, or an account with Administrative privileges.
2. Browse to your RIS 2.0 install directory. I believe the default is C:\Program Files\LEGO MINDSTORMS\RIS 2.0\
3 a. Right-Click LaunchRis2.exe.
3 b. Select the "Compatibility" tab.
3 c. Select "Run this program in compatibility mode for Windows 98/ME".
4 a. Browse to C:\Program Files.
4 b. Right-click the LEGO MINDSTORMS folder, go to the Security tab.
4 c. Click "add". Under "Enter the object names to select" type "Everyone" and click "OK".
4 d. Under the "group or user name" list on the Security tab, select "Everyone" and ensure that the "Full Control" box is checked under "Permissions". Click OK.
5 a. Click Start -> Search -> All Files & Folders. Under "advanced option" ensure that "Search all files and folders" is checked off.
5 b. Search for "2.0.mov.#res" and delete every instance of the file that occurs.
Reboot. On one of my laptops a newer version of QuickTime was installed, which was also prompting a QuickTime error. I uninstalled it, and installed QuickTime 6.5.2 from http://oldversion.com/program.php?n=quicktime
Ensure RIS 2.0 runs under an administrator account, and under non-administrator accounts. Please let me know if this works - it worked on my two machines, but I can't guarantee it will work for everyone else.

Getting RCX to work on Windows 7
NOTE: To install this software you need a Lego USB transmission Tower.
- Install the regular software from the mindstorms CD. When it asks you for maximum or minimum, pick maximum (we don’t want the students to need a CD when they run the software).
- When it completes, tell it you don’t want to reboot yet.
- Exit from RIS, remove CD.
- Download and unzip RIS20XPPatch.zip
- Double click on RIS20XPPatch to run it.
- Download (into a different folder) and unzip LEGOTower.zip
- Double click on Setup for that patch.
- Plug in the Lego Mindstorms USB transmission Tower into the USB port. Let it auto-install (your drivers will be found in the files extracted from the LEGOTower.zip file.
- Restart the computer
- Run the lego “Robotics invention system” software. When you get to the part where it asks you to install batteries in the RCX, select cancel, and then select yes to indicate that you know you won’t have downloaded the firmware.
- Quit from the program.
Believe it or not, you’ve done it!
